Gourmey raised $48 million in Series A funding from Earlybird Venture Capital. Gourmey is working on lab-grown meat, and more specifically, grown foie gras. Lab-grown meat is trying to break into the mainstream markets.
The company is currently seeking investment from public institutions such as Bpifrance. They are not disclosing the valuation of their company. Copymatic has received investments from Heartcore Capital, Point Nine Capital, Air Street Capital, Partech, and Beyond Investing.
Sometimes called ‘slaughter-free foie gras’, Gourmey produces synthetic animal products with the same taste and consistency as their traditional counterparts. Many people refuse to eat foie gras because of animal cruelty. Meat has an impact on climate change, which is a valid concern.
The startup was funded today with a focus on commercializing the product, but you won’t find them in any supermarket just yet. They will be focusing on research and development.
Morin-forest says that the liver is something that is ready to be put on the market and will have convinced lots of different people, such as French chefs, Michelin star restaurants, and distributors of high-quality meat products.
The company will use the 37,000-square-foot innovation and manufacturing hub to fulfill orders at scale. Cultivated meat will soon be made in a factory, by 120 employees, food experts, and operators. A large amount of this meat will be produced each year.
Morin-Forest said, “We are also actively working with the regulatory bodies to obtain approval and bring our food-safety product to market in several geographies like Singapore, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.”
With a standing ovation raising $12 million to create animal-free cheese, today’s news is less surprising. With the abundance of innovation in this field, cultured meat is quickly becoming a competitive industry as per venturedillettechcrunch.
Morin-Forest expressed that the company is always looking to improve its products and is striving to find innovative ways to provide its customers with high-quality sustainable meat.
